Thursday 15 October 2020 Filed in: General

With Bonfire Night fast approaching and many traders needing a safe space to keep their stock, it's time to look at how shipping containers can provide safe and secure storage for fireworks. Whether you're simply planning to keep your stock in one, or convert one into a shop for selling fireworks from, you can tick all the boxes for Trading Standards storing fireworks in shipping containers.

Safety first

It is recommended by Trading Standards that any business planning to store explosives such as fireworks should use an ISO shipping container or similar fully enclosed metal container. When storing fireworks in a shipping container it is recommended that:-
  •     Any container used for the storage of fireworks must be kept closed and either locked or positioned so as to prevent the public having direct access to the fireworks.

  •     Explosives must be kept in a storage space that can be used exclusively for that purpose to stop the spread of fire.

  •     Containers must be suitably robust so that they remain stable and effective throughout their use for this purpose.

Shipping containers are the strongest type of metal container that you can buy. They are designed to withstand years at sea with other containers stacked on top, therefore they will remain structurally sound for many years. Not only does their design and build guard against holes and leaks, keeping your stock dry, but they are incredibly difficult to break into. If you're buying a shipping container for storage, check it comes with a lockbox that prevents the padlock being tampered with, giving you extra security.

Sizes of shipping containers

Depending on how big a trader you are, you can buy shipping containers from 8ft long up to 40ft long. Smaller sizes are cut down from 40ft shipping containers, and can be fitted with a choice of door types to suit your needs. Find out more about door choices available at Containers Direct. If you are converting your container into a shop from which to sell fireworks, you may want to consider a personnel door or even patio style doors.
