SHIPPING CONTAINER
A SHIPPING CONTAINER, in ordinary terms, is a large metal, lockable box. It is this basic structure lends itself to many different uses, from a simple storage container to converted portable cabin. And of course it can still be used for its original purpose - to ship goods!
Depending upon the intended usage of a SHIPPING CONTAINER, there are two main types available from Containers Direct. If you want to use a container for shipping, for instance if you are moving abroad, you will need to buy an ISO shipping container. This means it has been certified to conform to uniform standards, allowing it to be transported along with other shipping containers. These containers usually come in two lengths - 20ft and 40ft, with a width of 8ft. Using one of these containers is by far the cheapest method of transportation abroad, as they can be stacked up and secured together with interlocking cones to form a bulk cargo.
For purposes other than shipping, there are many different types of non-ISO shipping containers on the market. The most frequent reason for buying a SHIPPING CONTAINER these days is for storage, so it can become a little confusing when a containers used for storage is also referred to as a SHIPPING CONTAINER . To make it a little clearer, any container that has 'retired' from shipping can be used for storage, but some of these containers will have been adapted to be better designed for storage. Therefore they no longer conform to ISO SHIPPING CONTAINER standards. Common adaptations include:-
'Cutting down' to produce containers of any required length - this means you are no longer restricted to 20ft and 40ft containers! 10ft containers are one of the most requested sizes for storage
Restructuring the doors - this can mean making new ones, adding extra ones, or moving the existing ones to a more convenient position on the container
Lining and insulating - recommended to protect items that are particularly vunerable to moisture damage
Specialist conversions - a SHIPPING CONTAINER can even be used as the shell for a portable cabin or office. Containers Direct have a conversion department that can transform any ordinary SHIPPING CONTAINER into something like this great little office
