The doors

As this conversion requires no end doors (these are being replaced with side doors and an internal door), the first thing we must do is remove the standard shipping container end doors and replace the open end with a new end wall. For more on this step, read our article on making a new end wall. On this job, we took a larger 40ft container and cut down to 20ft, using the section left without the doors to proceed with.

Side doors

We start by cutting an aperture into position in the side of the container. To this we weld in a steel frame that we can attach the new doors to. These doors are made from flat steel panels that are ideal for frequent use on containers used for storage - this section of the container is to be used for storing equipment.

Roller shutter

The conversion requires a small 3ft wide x 4ft drop roller shutter, in the smaller partitioned side of the container. As with the fitting new doors, first we must cut the correct size aperture into position, and then fit a frame to hold the shutter.

The flooring

The ply floor is overlaid with vinyl.

Melamine lining and insulation

Lining and insulation controls the temperature within the container, eliminates condensation, and reduces noise levels. The melamine boards are easy to clean with a quick wipe down. To line, first we create a timber frame into which we pack in rockwool insulating material, and then fit 8mm thick melamine boards over the top of this.

The Partition

To create the 6ft x 8ft area to be used as a small office, we created a partition, with a 14ft high x 6ft wide timber door fitted into it. We used a timber frame and melamine board, as used to line the container. The office section incorporates the roller shutter window.

Electrics

The container is fitted with an electrical package that includes:

  •     Consumer Unit

  •     External Hook Up

  •     3 x 5ft strip Lights

  •     4 x Double Sockets

  •     2 x 2Kw Mounted Convector Heater
